Hot Selling

So it has been over two years since Kia Sportage launched in the Pakistani market and enough consumers have bought it to ensure that Kia is here to stay. The reviews about this car are also quite positive and it has adversely affected the sale of the Honda Civic in Pakistan. While there are several reasons for that, it fairs better than other cars in either this category or the ones close by it.

Before we go any further, we want to state that the Kia Sportage we are reviewing here is the 4th generation that’s currently running in Pakistan. While the 5th generation has been revealed internationally, its booking has not started anywhere in the world at the time of this article. It’s expected that the booking will start either at the end of 2021 or at the start of 2022. In Pakistan, it might take a year or so more than that.

So in this review, we are going to compare Kia Sportage with cars like Honda Civic, Honda CRV, MG HS, Kia Sorrento, and Suzuki Grand Vitara, all briefly while we dissect all its features.

Before we go any further, let’s talk about its price.

Kia Sportage Alpha PKR 4,294,000

Kia Sportage FWD PKR 4,782,000

Kia Sportage AWD PKR 5,270,000

All of these variants have a 1999 cc petrol engine and automatic transmission.

So, what’s the difference? Well, we will bring that up in every aspect of the car we are going to talk about.

Starting from the exterior, the Kia Sportage like most other Kia cars features the tiger-nose front grille. This is a signature feature of Kia cars and Sportage has carried on this tradition. All three of its variants have the same dimensions. You might notice a few millimeters of a difference but that is too small of a to notice while in usage.

Its AMD and FWD variants are equipped with LED projector headlights, rear lights, and fog lights whereas the Alpha variant has halogen lights. Its rear lights are connected with a long strip in the middle which makes the car seem like a Porsche Cayenne. However, the disappointing thing here is that this strip light doesn’t work, it’s just a showpiece.

Another major difference in the three variants is that the Alpha does not feature Panoramic sunroof or roof rails whereas the AMD and FWD variants do. This is one way to recognize these variants from their exterior, as no label is present on the rear side to suggest so.

Besides these, minor differences exist like the 17” alloy rims in the Alpha variant whereas the AWD and FWD are equipped with 18” alloy rims. One of the things that stands out in Kia Sportage is that it comes with Kumho tires, which are quite good compared to the General tires that we normally get in cars from the big three.

While the interior of the Kia Sportage is moderately futuristic, the difference between these three variants is also quite small. In accordance with the price range, the Alpha has high-grade fabric seat covers, the FWD has premium grade fabric covers and the AWD variant has premium leather seat covers.

Another small difference is that while the AWD and FWD variants have leather-like material in the interior side of the doors whereas the Alpha’s material looks like a plasticky material. Moreover, you’ll find a manual handbrake in the Kia Sportage Alpha whereas the AWD and FWD variants have electronic handbrakes.

Besides these, you get all the controls in the steering wheels of all the variants.

When it comes to the features of all three variants of Kia Sportage in Pakistan, you’ll notice that the AWD features both front and back parking sensors, whereas the FWD features only the rear parking sensors, not the front one.

However, since the Kia Sportage Alpha is the basic variant, it’s normal to expect it to have fewer features. Here are the features missing in the Alpha.

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Downhill Brake Control
  • Hill-Start Assist Control
  • Vehicle Stability Management
  • Power Windows (without safety)
  • Adjustable Lumbar Support (Front) (not powered)
  • Room Lamps (no LED)
  • Personal Lamps (Rear) (no led)
  • Overhead Console Lamp (no led)
  • No Park Assist Sensors
  • No Electronic Parking Brake
  • No Auto Hold

If you are a regular reader of Carmandee blogs, you’ll know by now that in the mechanic's section of a car review we discuss the engine, transmission, and suspension. However, unlike our other review blogs, there’s not much to discuss the mechanics of Kia Sportage as all variants are equipped with the same engine, transmission, and suspension.

All we can say is that all of these are quite excellent for daily use as well as long roads. However, keep in mind while the Kia Sportage might look like a crossover SUV that can be used for off-roading, it’s not. It’s only designed to look like an offroading car but it won’t far well in real offroading.

It fairs well on bumpy roads especially the kinds that exist in Pakistan, better than any C or D segment cars that we get from the big three in Pakistan.

We believe the exponential sale of Kia Sportage is proof that it is a better option than the D segment sedans or other crossover SUVs in Pakistan. However, if you want our opinion on this car, it is also quite positive. The quality of Kia Sportage is quite well, and its owners will have a good time using it in the short term as well as the long term.

As compared to Suzuki Grand Vitara and Honda BRV, Kia Sportage is a champion. However, when it comes to Hyundai Tucson, it will have tough competition but keep in mind Tucson is a more expensive option. Lastly, when compared with MG HS, the Kia Sportage lags behind quite a lot.

However, MG is not as big and as reliable a brand as Kia is. Moreover, MG’s late deliveries issue has tarnished its reputation quite a lot and is the number one concern for anyone considering to buy it. This puts Kia Sportage in an advantaged position.
