In an auto market that is dominated by Toyota's and Honda's sedans, Hyundai was gutsy enough to launch and market a sedan for the masses. Promising a modern and future-oriented design, the Korean automaker has launched the Elantra 1.6L in Pakistan.

Initially, Hyundai introduced Elantra 2.0L in the local auto market in March 2021. As a new entrant, its success was promising as it increased the sales of Elantra by 186% From Jan 2022 to Feb 2022.

Elantra 2.0L is a direct competitor of prevalent C segment sedans like Toyota Corolla Grande and Honda Civic whereas the new Elantra 1.6L will compete against base variants of C segment sedans i.e. 1.5L Civic Standard, 1.6L Corolla, and 1.5L Civic Oriel.

However, in terms of pricing, it is a direct competitor of top-of-the-line B segment variants i.e. 1.5L Aspire City and 1.5L Yaris CVT.

Launch Date

Before Eid, Hyundai wanted to surprise its prospective buyers with the launch of the second variant of Elantra. The new Elantra is now available for purchase in dealerships nationwide.

Price Tag and Booking Price

It is expected that Elantra 1.6L will launch with a price tag of approximately Rs. 4,299,000 and it will be available for bookings for Rs. 1,200,000.

Expected Response

According to Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), Hyundai-Nishat sold 2,784 Elantras since its launch which is a great feat in itself. The car sold only 46 units in 2021 whereas it sold 312 units in February 2022 alone resulting in a 578 percent surge.

There is a dominant narrative in the domestic market that the 1.8L or 2.0L models consume way too much fuel due to their large engines. This is one of the core reasons Elantra 2.0L faced some sales issues at the start due to the high fuel consumption and the hefty price tag.

However, with the advent of this fuel-efficient 1.6L variant, more buzz will be created in the local auto market.

Engine

Elantra 1.6L variant features a 1600cc engine that is capable of producing 126hp and 155Nm of torque. Moreover, it has 6-speed auto Triptronic transmission which is representative of its predecessor.

Exterior

The new Elantra 1.6L is introducing ‘dynamic precision’ technology which is all about a new exterior body style that can be achieved through Fluidic Sculpture 2.0. As a result, a dynamic and versatile view of the sedan is depicted.

Auto-sensing wipers are not present in the newly introduced variant. Furthermore, it has a keyless entry with a jackknife rather than the standard smart entry which is a mood spoiler. The smart trunk option is not present in the 1.6L version and you can open the trunk via the keyless entry key.

Elantra 1.6L comes with LED tetra headlights along with side indicators. Features that are reminiscent of its predecessor are the front grille garnish, sunroof, LED rear lamps, chrome garnish and chrome handles, and the two-tone 16-inch alloy wheels.

Interior

Although the exterior of the two cars is very same some major changes have been made to the interior.

The leather steering seems to be missing and is replaced by a plastic one as the old variant was pricier and offered more luxe things. Moreover, wireless charger, traction control, push start and cruise control, and the drive mode feature is not offered in the new sedan. The car is taking a step back and has manual climate control whereas the 2.0L variant had digitally controlled climate control.
